There is no word for ‘relocate’ in the Navajo language. To Navajos, relocation means to disappear forever. In 1974, Congress passed a law that ended a land dispute between the Navajo and the Hopi tribes. The Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act caused the relocation of thousands of Navajos from their homes in Arizona. How have residents adapted to their new lives? In Part 1, June Benally recounts the heartache of leaving the home where she was born and starting over. In Part 2, residents of the New Lands protest the preponderance of liquor stores in their new community and try to force the closure of the stores. Lastly, Part 3, Navajo ranchers continue the tradition of raising livestock at a demonstration ranch in the New Lands. |
